Use of Language

Mother and Daughter talking

When giving instruction it is important to “Slow down the instruction, this does not mean water down or leave out of important information. It means slow it down to the rate that the individual can process that information.”

  • Recognise for whom we are providing the information.
  • Respect the needs and preferred learning style of the child or young person.
  • Check for comprehension, this allows us to see the limitless potential of the student with autism.
  • Imagine the impact on the student.
  • Simplify the language that we use, remember the message, keep it specific and leave out the extraneous.
